For years, the NASA Space Apps Challenge has been a global platform bringing together coders, scientists, designers, storytellers, makers, builders, and technologists from across the globe. It has become a fertile ground for participants to challenge their skills in solving problems through the application of science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics, and much more. NASA incubator innovation program is recognized as one of the world’s largest hackathons. We are thrilled to announce the continuation of the Space Apps Challenge in the heart of South Asia – Nepal, in 2023. This is not just a milestone for the people of Nepal, but also a monumental effort in space innovation and digital transformation initiatives.

The History of NASA Space Apps Challenge in Nepal

The NASA Space Apps Challenge, initiated by NASA in 2012, first found its footing in Nepal in 2013, though it was confined only to one city. It wasn't until the Nepal Astronomical Society joined the ground in 2019 that the challenge began to reach more people, branching out for the first time to locations beyond Kathmandu Valley. In 2019, Nepal Astronomical Society (NASO) facilitated the event in two cities: Kathmandu and Biratnagar.

As NASO moved into 2020-2022, NASO reach expanded even further. They hosted the Challenge at eight different locations: Itahari, Janakpur, Lalitpur (which produced 2 Global Finalists and 1 Honourable Mention), Dhulikhel, Pokhara, Butwal, Surkhet, and Dhangadhi, which respectively contributed a Global Finalist.

In a strategic move for 2023, NASO have decided to host one event in each province, totalling seven different locations across Nepal, with Dhulikhel being dropped from the list.

In recent years, these event locations have seen one Honourable Mention and three Global Finalists emerge in the NASA Space Apps Challenge. This achievement stands as a tribute to the hard work of the committed team, enabling students from different regions of the country to showcase their inventive abilities in tackling NASA's annual challenges since 2019. It truly reflects the potential and imaginative spirit thriving in these regions.

NASA’s Space Apps Challenge will be organized across nine diverse and vibrant locations of Nepal:

  1. Dhangadhi
  2. Surkhet
  3. Butwal
  4. Pokhara
  5. Kathmandu
  6. Lalitpur
  7. Bhaktapur
  8. Janakpur
  9. Itahari

This Grand Event will happen 7-8 October in Nepal at the above mentioned locations.

The introduction of the NASA Space Apps Challenge in these regions is the result of consistent advocacy and lobbying by various astronomy and initiatives organizations that have strongly lobbied for hosting this event in these areas of Nepal. The event will be a blend of traditional, in-person format and hybrid mode, making it accessible to a wide spectrum of participants.
